Harriet Newberry Martin, 93, died Jan. 28, 2000. Born in Columbia, N.C., she was 
the daughter of Dascear Octavius Newberry and Harriet Patrick Newberry, and the 
widow of George Gresham Martin Jr. Most of her life, she lived in Norfolk.
She is survived by her daughter, Harriet Martin Robinson of Norfolk; three 
grandchildren, Irving Fillmore Truitt III of Mechanicsville, Va., Margaret 
Truitt Walbert of Charlotte, N.C., Dale Martin Truitt Berrett of Virginia Beach; 
and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Martin attended Norfolk Public Schools and St. Mary's College in Raleigh, 
N.C. Her special interest in writing led to awards and the opportunity to 
contribute to many organizations.

A patron of the arts, she was a life member of the Hermitage Foundation 
Auxiliary and a past program director. The Norfolk City Council appointed her to 
the Fine Arts Committee, which later became the Design Review Committee, on 
which she served for 10 years. She was a member of the Great Bridge Chapter, 
Daughters of the American Revolution, a past board member of the Norfolk Society 
of Arts, a member of the Chrysler Museum, Sentara General Hospital Auxiliary and 
the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of 
the Good Shepherd.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Magnolia Cemetery, 
Berkley, by the Rev. Ross Wright. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be 
made to a charity of the donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk 
Chapel, is handling arrangements.
