He had been in declining health for a number of years. He was probably 95 years of age. Mr. Mason was first admitted to the Municipal Hospital in 1937. After remaining there for a while, he left but was readmitted in 1941. During his declining health, he was unable to carry papers, but as long as he was able to get about the streets he sold newspapers. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Israel Mason, Mr. Mason was born in Princess Anne County, but came to Norfolk many years ago. He enjoyed a long and interesting career as a newspaper salesman. He first sold the daily papers on the streets of Norfolk and later became a salesman for the Journal and Guide. It was during the years that he sold the Journal and Guide that Gus Mason became widely known in Norfolk. He worked late into the night and went into just about all the places in uptown Norfolk selling the Journal and Guide. It is likely that not one boy in the city did as good a job as he did selling the Journal and Guide. The body of Mr. Mason is at the funeral home of W. F. Taylor and Sons at 871 East Princess Anne road. Funeral arrangements had not been made Thursday afternoon pending the location of some of his relatives. The funeral director sent a telegram to Mrs. Nellie Baines of Portsmouth, who was said to be a cousin or niece of Mr. Mason. No reply had been received Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock. It was thought that Mr. Mason’s funeral would be held at the First Church of Christ Holiness on Princess Anne road where the deceased was a member.
