Born Sept. 12, 1917, in Princess Anne County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Charles Howard and Ella Mildred Curtis Mast and widower of Cleo Frizzell Mast. He was a 1938 graduate of VPI where he played football and ran track. Following graduation, he taught school and coached high school football in Richmond, Va., and played semi-pro ball with the Norfolk Shamrocks and Richmond Arrows, before joining the Navy. He served on a PT Boat in the Pacific during World War II. Upon discharge from the Navy, he taught at Wilson High School in Portsmouth and served as assistant football coach for the 1947 Virginia State Champions. In 1949, he came to the Suffolk Recreation Department as the director, where he began a tennis development program and within 10 years, the young people he had schooled in tennis were playing for Suffolk High School and were state champions. He also founded the Suffolk Tennis Association. In 1966, he joined Virginia Wesleyan College as facility engineer, tennis coach and instructor in physical education. He retired from Norfolk State University, having served for 20 years as the facility engineer. More recently, he served as substitute teacher in the Suffolk school system and served as tennis coach at Nansemond River High School. He served as president of the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association in the mid-1960s and was a former president of the Virginia Tennis Association. He was inducted into the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association Hall of Fame and in 2005 was awarded the Outstanding Service Award by the Virginia Tennis Association. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Christopher M. and Thomas L. Witherspoon of Virginia Beach; brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and El Mast of Florida; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and William Halstead of Atlanta. Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert J. Parks and the Rev. John Shappell. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Suffolk Tennis Association, P.O. Box 1514, Suffolk, VA 23439, or to Access Aquarium Fund at the Virginia Aquarium, 717 General Booth Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23451. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the family.
