Mastracco Sr., 88, of Regent Road, co-founder of Giant Open Air Markets, and husband of Cecelia Russo Mastracco, died Feb. 16, 1994, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. Mastracco was a native of Alatria, Italy, and came to this country in 1910. In 1944, he joined his nephew, the late Wendell Rosso, in founding Giant Open Air Markets, with which he remained affiliated until his retirement in 1976. Prior to his establishing the Giant Open Air Markets chain, he was employed in the composing room of The Virginian-Pilot. He was a Catholic, a kind and gentle man and had a wide acquaintance throughout the Norfolk area. He was the first member of the Boys Club of Norfolk, an organization he considered as having a positive influence on his life. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Theresa M. Vita; a son, Vincent James Mastracco Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Suzanne Tyler Mastracco; and a son-in-law, Joseph A. Vita Jr., all of Norfolk; a sister, Mrs. Mary Wilder and a brother, Claude V. Mastracco, both of Norfolk; and six grandchildren, Stephanie Vita Salerno and James A. Vita of Virginia Beach, Elizabeth Vita Cooper, Anna B. Mastracco, Sarah T. Mastracco and V. James Mastracco III, all of Norfolk; and five great-grandchildren, Jason, Ryan and Gregory Vita and Dana and Corey Salerno of Virginia Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church by the Rev. John A. Dorgan. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters or the Boys and Girls Club of South Hampton Roads.
