Born in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of the late Mary Simpson Chenault and Rev. Dr. Fred R. Chenault. She grew up as a "PK" ("preacher's kid"), who lived in many areas of the south where her father served as a pastor. One such assignment was at Park Place United Methodist Church in Norfolk. Jo graduated from Converse College in Spartansburg, SC and served as a model English teacher with the Norfolk Public School System. Grammar and creative writing were her specialties. Aside from her parents, she was predeceased by her loving daughter, Janet M. Kanzig and two sisters, Emily Gray Garber and Mary Jane Taylor. She leaves her husband of 53 years, Raymond John Mattes, Jr.; a son, Raymond A. Lyall and wife, Maria, of Norfolk; a daughter, Julie Sailor Hume, and husband, Bill, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, a son, Raymond John Mattes III and wife, Sandy, of Virginia Beach, a daughter, Elizabeth "Libby" Sailor Voetsch and husband, retired Adm. Stephen Voetsch, U.S.N., of Norfolk, a son, Algernon Keith, Capt. USCG Retired, of Virginia Beach. There are six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and her "special adopted sister", Mary Barnett. All will mourn her loss. A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14th in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Rev. Scott Rimer, pastor at Larchmont United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at a later date.
