D. Oliver Funeral Apartments December, 2022 Raymond John Mattes, Jr., 89, passed away on December 10, 2022. Born in Norfolk, the only child of parents Raymond John Mattes and Rose Niegro, he spent early formative years in La Plata, Maryland, returning to Norfolk, where he attended Sacred Heart School and graduating from Norfolk Catholic High School. After high school, Raymond joined the US Air Force and was active in the Air Force Reserves for 7 years following his 4 years of active duty. He went on to graduate from William and Mary in Education and was a teacher for 32 years for the Norfolk Public School system and served two years with the University of Virginia Department of Desegregation. Preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 53 years Jocasta (Jo) Mattes and his daughter Jan Kanzig (husband Terry). He is survived by his sons Raymond Mattes, III (wife Sandy), Algernon ‘Al’ Keith and Raymond ‘Randy’ Lyall (wife Maria) and daughters Julie Hume (husband Bill) and Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Voetsch (husband Steve). He is also survived by grandchildren Jennifer ‘Jennie’ Hutchinson (husband Todd), William ‘Billy’ Hume, Brooke Foris (husband Eric), RJ Mattes IV (wife Bryce) and Ryan Mattes and Julia Newman (husband Will), and great- grandchildren Risdon and Sanders Mattes, Zoe and Devin Foris, William and Goldie Hume, Jocasta (Joey) Mattes and Elizabeth Newman. The family wishes to express their sincere and personal thanks to Westminster Hospice and to Hearts at Home Eldercare, specifically, D. Blair Baughman (husband Chad), Liz and Teonna for their dedicated commitment and attention to our father’s care and his final days. A Memorial Service will be held at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Avenue, Norfolk, on Sunday December 18, 2022, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends at a visitation an hour before the service.
