All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Dorothy Strawhand https://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00034.html#0008405 January 6, 2017, 5:51 pm Norfolk Virginian Pilot Sunday July 11, 1937 James Edward Matthews, aged 88, died in Charlotte, N.C., yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock, after an illness of three weeks.  He was a native of Nansemond County and had been a resident of Bertie County, N.C. most of his life prior to his retirement 18 years ago.  Mr. Matthews was a widely known farmer of Bertie County for more than 50 years and was active in the civic, religious and cultural life of the community.  He devoted much of his life to music, having been a vocal instructor in that section of North Carolina for many years.  He had the distinction of being the youngest Confederate Veteran in Bertie County. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Prosper Powell and Mrs. Elizabeth Valentine, both of Norfolk; two sons, J.L. Matthews, of this city with whom he had spent much of his time for the past ten years; and W.C. Matthews, of Charlotte; two brothers, William H. Matthews, Fentress, Va., and John T. Matthews, Washington, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Edward Tillett, Norfolk and a half sister, Mrs. Tuly Kiff, Fentress, 11 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.  He was a member of Park Place Baptist Church and an ardent supporter of the Men's Bible Class of that church. The body will arrive in Norfolk this morning and will be taken to the funeral home of E. Lee Cox & Bro. 631 Westover avenue, where funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
