She was the wife of James E. Matthews and daughter of the late James Jackson and Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis Britton. She was born in Hertford County, N.C., but had been a resident of Aulander for more than 10 years. She was a member of Cornaritsa Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she leaves three sons and three daughters, J.L. Matthews, Mrs. J.A. Valentine and Mrs. Prosper Powell, of this city; and W.C. Matthews, Charlotte, N.C.; E.J. Matthews, Lawrenceville, Va., and Mrs. J.S. Jenkins, Aulander. The body of Mrs. Matthews will be brought to Norfolk for funeral services and interment, the time of which will be announced later. ********************** Mrs. Frances Britton Matthews - Funeral services for Mrs. Matthews, wife of James E. Matthews, who died at her home, Aulander, N.C., Sunday afternoon, will be conducted at the funeral home of E. Lee Cox & Bro., 631 Westover avenue, this afternoon at 2 o'clock by the Rev. Ira D.S. Knight, pastor of Park Place Baptist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
