The Virginian Pilot and Norfolk Landmark Monday September 17, 1928
Mrs. Frances Britton Matthews, aged 84, died suddenly at her home in 
Aulander, N.C., yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. She was the wife of James 
E. Matthews and daughter of the late James Jackson and Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis 
Britton. She was born in Hertford County, N.C., but had been a resident of 
Aulander for more than 10 years. She was a member of Cornaritsa Baptist 
Church.
In addition to her husband, she leaves three sons and three daughters, J.L. 
Matthews, Mrs. J.A. Valentine and Mrs. Prosper Powell, of this city; and 
W.C. Matthews, Charlotte, N.C.; E.J. Matthews, Lawrenceville, Va., and Mrs. 
J.S. Jenkins, Aulander. The body of Mrs. Matthews will be brought to Norfolk 
for funeral services and interment, the time of which will be announced 
later.

Mrs. Frances Britton Matthews - Funeral services for Mrs. Matthews, wife of 
James E. Matthews, who died at her home, Aulander, N.C., Sunday afternoon, 
will be conducted at the funeral home of E. Lee Cox & Bro., 631 Westover 
avenue, this afternoon at 2 o'clock by the Rev. Ira D.S. Knight, pastor of 
Park Place Baptist Church.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
