Virginian Pilot August 23, 1911
John W. Matthews died at the Protestant Hospital at 7 o'clock a.m. yesterday after 
an illness of more than twelve months, in the 42nd year of his age.  The deceased 
was a native of Norfolk and had resided here his entire life, where he had 
numerous friends who will regret to learn of his passing away.  He is survived by 
a widow, a son, Roland Matthews, and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Knight, of this city.  
He was a communicant of McKendree M.E. Church.  The funeral will be held from his 
late residence, 308  North Marshall ave, at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon.  The 
interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
