White Matthews Jr. passed away peacefully Sunday, March 17, 2002, after a very short illness. He was the son of L. White Matthews Sr. and Addie N. Matthews of Birmingham, Ala. Mr. Matthews was born and reared in Birmingham. He was quite active in the Boy Scouts of America and attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1925. Graduating from Phillips High School in 1927, he entered Auburn University and became a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Awarded a degree in electrical engineering from Auburn in 1931, he joined General Motors Corporation in Montgomery, Ala. While in Montgomery, he began courting Virginia Carolyn Chandler. They were married in 1939. Mr. Matthews spent 19 years of his successful business career with Gary Steel Corporation in Norfolk, Ashland, Ky., and Lynchburg, Va. In 1963 he joined E.T. Gresham Company of Norfolk, from which he retired after 15 years of service. Throughout his life, Mr. Matthews was always active in his local church. He became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk in 1946. He served the church for many years as deacon, elder and treasurer. He was also a director of the Presbyterian Home of Lynchburg and Zuni Presbyterian Training Center for 14 years. During his life, he provided leadership for numerous fund-raising campaigns for his local churches as well as the United Way. For a number of years, he was co-chair of the business group for the United Way of South Hampton Roads. Mr. Matthews was a lifelong Rotarian. He first joined Rotary International in Ashland, Ky., in 1943. With career relocations he moved his Rotary membership to the Norfolk and Lynchburg Clubs. In 1964 he joined the Northside Rotary Club of Norfolk and served as its president in 1969-70. During his Rotary career, he had more than 25 years of perfect attendance. In 1980 he was made a Paul Harris Fellow, one of Rotary's highest awards recognizing his service. During the past four years, Mr. Matthews resided at Warwick Forest, an assisted-living community in Newport News. His family wishes to thank the staff, particularly those on the Evergreen, for their unfailing love and support. Mr. Matthews was predeceased by his beloved wife, Virginia Chandler Matthews, and is survived by his daughter, Virginia Matthews Shriver of Yorktown, Va.; his son, L. White Matthews III of Charlottesville, Va., and Wilson, Wyo.; and his loving sister, Martha Franklin Matthews of Birmingham, Ala. He had two grandchildren, Courtney Chandler Matthews of Boston and Brian W. Matthews, a senior at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Other survivors include a daughter-in-law, Jane H. Matthews, and a son-in-law, Larry D. Shriver. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a memorial gift be made to the Presbyterian Home and Family Services, 150 Linden Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24503, or Alzheimer's Association, 20 Interstate Corporate Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, VA 23502.
