He was a retired ship chandler and former CEO and manager of William H. Swan & Sons and was also associated with Peltz Brothers and Cavalier Marine. Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Josie Badger Matthews and James L. Matthews Sr. Jim was a member of Episcopal Church of the Ascension, a past president of the Norfolk Optimist Club, Ruth Masonic Lodge No. 89 and the Hampton Roads Maritime Association. He was a former member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club where he was very active in Hampton One Design Sailing Regattas and The Harbor Club. Jim was also a World War II veteran having served in the Army Air Force. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Evelyn Kramer Matthews; two daughters, Carol A. Matthews and Margaret "Peggy" M. Soblotne, both of Virginia Beach; a son, James L. Matthews III and his wife Suzanne of Carrollton, Va.; stepdaughter, Laura H. Jordan of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, P. Aaron Matthews, Denny Goldin, Timmy Goldin, Bryce Goldin, Jennifer Soblotne, Tracie Soblotne and Trafton R. Jordan; six great-grandchildren; and his goddaughter, Stacy Minnigerode. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Eric Goldin. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Monday in the Episcopal Church of the Ascension by the Rev. David Davenport and the Rev. Samantha Vincent Alexander. Burial will be private in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will be at Cox Funeral Home Sunday from 3 until 4 p.m. for visitation. In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorial contributions be made to Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 405 Talbot Hall Road, Norfolk, VA 23505.
