She was born in Covington, KY, the daughter of the late Clemens and Cedora Deters. Joan was a graduate of La Salette Academy, Covington, KY, in 1953; she also studied at Xavier University. Joan was married to James B. Maus on September 3, 1955, at the Basilica of The Assumption in Covington, KY. Joan was active in Catholic parishes and schools in various locations, having served on the school board in Lancaster, OH; in church choirs for 45 years, most recently at Blessed Sacrament Parish. Joan, with a partner, opened and operated the Fairfield Wine and Cheese Co. in Lancaster, OH, from 1983 until 1988, closing due to family relocation to Minneapolis. She and Jim traveled extensively during their active years and after retirement. As a resident of Norfolk, VA, since 2000, Joan was active in the Lawrence T. Royster Circle of King's Daughters. In addition to her choir work, she was a faithful volunteer at St. Patrick's Catholic School art department and provided weekly meals to the Ronald McDonald House. Joan was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She is survived by her husband James B. Maus, seven children, Julie Larger (Joe) of Ft. Mitchell, KY, Melissa Towler (Brian) of Chillicothe, OH, Ellie Rice (Ben Kulina) of Columbus, OH, Mary Fajack (Steve West) of Minneapolis, MN, James Maus (Tami) of Cincinnati, OH, Katherine Kelly (Jim) Evanston, IL, and Joseph C. Maus (Robyn) of Norfolk, VA. In addition to her children, she treasured her twelve grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and dog Bess. A memorial service is planned in her honor, 2:00p.m. April 1, 2017, at the Norfolk Yacht & Country Club officiated by the Reverend Jean Bozeman, with a reception immediately following.
