Mr. Mayes was born in Oneida, Tenn. He had retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after nine years and had retired from the Navy after 21 years. He was an attendant at Metropolitan Funeral Home. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, Fleet Reserve Association and Disabled American Veterans. He was a past patron of New Light 219, Order of Eastern Star; a past president of Gents of Providence Square; and a past master of Progressive Masonic Lodge 80. Survivors include his wife, Jeane Mayes; four daughters, Sherri M. Ward of Ontario, Calif., Carolyn M. Sierra of Chesapeake, Joan P. Cason of Henderson, Nev., and Veronica M. Jackson of Los Angeles; two sons, Jay Mayes and Daniel L. Cason, both of Chesapeake; and 10 grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. Jake Manley. Burial with military honors and Masonic rites will be in Calvary Cemetery . The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday. Family and friends will assemble at 213 E.
