McAlpine, Pioneer Resident, Succumbs To Illness At Age of 92 Mrs. Laura Herbert McAlpine widow of Dr. James Newton McAlpine, and one of the best known women in Norfolk, died at her home 424 Warren Crescent, yesterday morning at 11:55 o'clock at the age of 92. A native of Princess Anne County and daughter of Edward Henry Herbert and Rebecca Tatem Herbert, Mrs. McAlpine had made her home in Norfolk for 50 years. As a teacher at the Norfolk College for Ladies on Granby Street for many years, there came under her instruction and genial influence many pupils who now are women of prominence in the city. As a charter member of the Woman's Club of Norfolk and at the time of her death, an honorary member of that organization, and as a member of the Princess Anne County Woman's Club, Mrs. McAlpine was keenly interested in all civic matters, and during recent years has kept in close touch with affairs of the city and world generally. The wife of a Confederate soldier, Mrs. McAlpine was endowed with all those traits and traditions characteristic of true Southern womanhood. Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Daisy Harwood, of St. Brides and Miss Rebecca McAlpine, of Norfolk; one granddaughter, Mrs. Ellie McAlpine Jones; two great- grandchildren, Mrs. R.J. Codd and Miss Marjorie McAlpine Jones; one great-great- granddaughter, Annie McAlpine Codd and one brother, Anmer Tatem Herbert. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 12 o'clock noon at the residence of a nephew, H.C. Hoggard, 413 West York Street, conducted by the Rev. D.N. McLauchlin, D.D., pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church of which Mrs. McAlpine was a member, and the Rev. H.H. Covington, D.D., rector of Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
