McCloud, aged 72 years and one of the pioneer citizens of South Norfolk, died Saturday night at 11:20 o'clock at the home of his son, John A. McCloud, Jr., 66 East Liberty Street, South Norfolk, after an illness of several weeks. He was one of the best known men in Norfolk County and had taken an active part in all county activities for many years. He had been active in Republican party councils. He conducted a grocery and wholesale and retail meat business. He served as postmaster of South Norfolk a score of years ago. He was a son of the late John A. McCloud, Sr., and Mrs. Bernetta Taylor McCloud, also residents of South Norfolk. Born in Portsmouth, he spent practically all his life in South Norfolk. He represented the Second district in the Republican National Convention several times. He retired from business in South Norfolk about ten years ago and bought a farm on Powell's Point, N.C., where he spent his declining days. He came to the city about six weeks ago, when he became ill and spent the remaining days with his son. Mr. McCloud is survived by seven sons. They are H.W. McCloud, Boston; J.A. McCloud, South Norfolk; F.R. McCloud, Aydlette, N.C.; E.L. and Alonzo McCloud, both in the United States Navy; C.T. and Thomas McCloud, Norfolk and one daughter, Miss Helen V. McCloud, Norfolk; one brother, Jesse McCloud, Deep Creek and one sister, Mrs. Kate Lattimer, Portlock. Mr. McCloud had been married three times, his last wife having died a few years ago. He was a charter member of Oakdale Lodge, No. 70, I.O.O.F. and for many years was one of the most active members of the Christian denomination of this section and held his membership in the First Christian Church of Berkley. The body was taken to the funeral home of J.R. Williams, 13 Chesapeake Avenue, South Norfolk where funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock by Rev. O.D. Poythress, pastor of South Norfolk Christian Church. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
