Lane Arrives in Norfolk She brought the Dead Body of One Member of Her Crew and Left Two in the Ocean The Carrie A. Lane is anchored off Berkley flats. Her record of wreck and disaster is for the time at an end. She arrived from Beaufort, N.C., in tow of the tug Edgar F. Luckenbach yesterday, and it is doubtful if she will be trusted outside again until she is refitted and repaired. Capt. R.E. Fletcher, of Bath Me., and a crew of five men were aboard, three lives having been lost on the trip to this port, Harry Kayton, of Pictou, N.S.; Frank McCover, of Brunswick, Ga., and Christopher Banes, of New York, having been swept overboard by the heavy seas Monday night and lost. The Luckenbach left Beaufort with the schooner in tow Sunday night, and the hurricane overtook them Monday and Monday night the seas put out the fires of the donkey engine running the schooner’s pumps, and she filled with water, reducing her to nearly the condition she was in when abandoned September 19th, in the great circle hurricane, when her crew was rescued, half starved, by the steamship Rhodesin. No other mishap attended, however, and she reached port yesterday. It was intended to tow her to Noank, Connecticut, to which port her cargo is consigned and then take her to Bath, to her owner’s shipyard for full repairs. She belongs to Hon. Arthur Sewall and he may still wish her to continue her voyage, but this is now considered doubtful and she may be remain here and be repaired. The body of Harry Kayton was wedged in the deck load and was saved and yesterday afternoon he was laid to rest in the seaman’s lot, Elmwood. The crew of the Lane were transferred Tuesday to the Luckenbach and brought in with her, the Lane following in helpless tow.
