Florence A. McDermott, 85, died Monday, August 20, 2007. Born May 23, 1922, in 
Norfolk, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Francis Ahman and the late 
Agnes Gaffney Ahman. Florence was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and a 
graduate of University of Missouri Journalism School. She worked for WTAR in 
Norfolk, Va. and WTOP in Washington, D.C. as an ad writer. Florence also wrote for 
the Coronado Journal, Bridge and Bay Magazine, and Chula Vista Star News, all in 
California. She was predeceased by her husband, LCDR Joseph A. McDermott Sr., USN; 
and son, Lt. Joseph A. McDermott Jr., USN. Florence is survived by son, Sean 
McDermott and wife, Toni, of Surfside Beach; four grandchildren, Bernadette, 
Andrew and Nicholas McDermott, all of Surfside Beach, and Patrick McDermott of 
Arizona; one great-grandchild, Payton McDermott of Arizona; and daughter-in-law, 
Ann McDermott of Arizona. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 
23, 2007, at St. Michael Catholic Church with Father Ray Carlo officiating. 
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2007, in St. Mary 
Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 6 
until 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2007, at the funeral home, with a prayer vigil

Building Fund, 542 Cypress Ave., Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. Goldfinch Funeral Home,
