Charles McDermott, Sr., who died at a local hospital Saturday night, was one of 
Norfolk’s best known and most loved citizens. Of Irish ancestry, Mr. McDermott 
came to this country about thirty-six years ago. He was nearly 71 at the time of 
his death. Arriving in the United States, Mr. McDermott came directly to Norfolk 
and has made his home in this city ever since his residence in this country began. 
Mr. McDermott's business life was spent on the sea: He traveled between Norfolk 
and Providence for the Merchants and Miners’ Steamship Company for a long time, 
but retired from active work about fifteen or twenty years ago and since that time 
has been living with his sister, Mrs. J. E. Flynn. The death of Mr. McDermott’s 
wife preceded his own by 31 years, she having passed away in the early ‘80s. Mr. 
McDermott was of the Catholic faith and he was an earnest churchman and a devout 
man.
Mr. McDermott's death was hastened by a recent accident in which he broke his leg.
He is survived by three children, Charles McDermott, Jr., secretary-treasurer of 
the Real Estate, Trust & Insurance Co., Inc., of Norfolk; Henry McDermott and Mrs. 
E. W. Jones, both of Norfolk; a sister, Mrs. J. E. Flynn; a brother, James E. 
McDermott, all of this city. He leaves also other relatives in Ireland.
Funeral services will take place from the residence of his brother-in-law, J. E. 
Flynn, No. 1 Lafayette Residence Park Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock and Rev. 
Edward J. Walsh of St. Mary’s Catholic church, will conduct the service.
