SURFSIDE BEACH - Services for Joseph Alexander McDermott, 77, will be held at 11 
a.m. Thursday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary’s 
Catholic Cemetery of Norfolk, Va., with military honors. Visitation will be from 
7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel, with a prayer 
service at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the church building fund or Mercy 
Hospice of Horry County.
Mr. McDermott died Monday, Nov. 27, 1995. Born in Baltimore, he was a son of the 
late Joseph and Marguerite Lawler McDermott. He was a Navy veteran and Pearl 
Harbor survivor and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Fleet Reserve, 
Grand Strand Patriotic Alliance, VFW Murrells Inlet Post 10420 and St. Michael’s 
Catholic Church, where he was an usher and a member of Knights of Columbus 4th 
degree.
Surviving are his wife, Florence Ahman McDermott; a son, Sean McDermott of 
Modesta, Calif.; sisters, Cecilia French and Nancy Stigler, both of Catonsville, 
Md., Mary Claire Gabler of Littleton, Colo., Joan Salzburg of Beloit, Wis., and 
Betty Bettien of Murrells Inlet; and four grandchildren.
