Mary was born April 23, 1931, in Norfolk and was the daughter of the late Allen J. Thatch and Elizabeth Cartwright Thatch. Mary attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Norfolk and was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School. After graduation she was employed as a secretary at the Norfolk Naval Supply Center and left to become a devoted mother and homemaker. Mary is survived by her loving husband of 53, John F. McGowan, lieutenant, retired N.P.D. and Chief of Police, retired Norfolk Naval Shipyard; two daughters, Donna M. Gatling and her husband David and Kathleen A. McGowan; four sons, John F. McGowan Jr. and his wife Linda, Edward J. McGowan, Michael J. McGowan and his wife Janell and Patrick A. McGowan and his wife Anne; 11 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren; a sister, Janice T. Schmitt of Virginia Beach; a brother, Raymond A. Thatch of New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she will always be remembered for her enjoyment of the simple things in life. Her most treasured moments were family gatherings which took place under her magnolia tree. A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church by the Rev. Wayne Ball. Burial will be at St. Mary 's Catholic Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the church Sunday at 7 p.m. Donations may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 175 W.
