James Douglas McGowan, 45, of 449 Longdale Crescent, the husband of Mrs. Genevieve Alessi McGowan, died Wednesday in a Portsmouth hospital. A native of Craven County, N.C., he had lived here for 10 years. He retired from the Army in 1972, after 16 years of service. He was employed as personnel management specialist at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and was president of the Indian River Athletic Association. Other survivors include four sons, Gary Douglas McGowan, Bryan James McGowan, Paul Edward McGowan Sr., and David Michael McGowan of Chesapeake; six sisters, Mrs. Lillie Mae Rivers of Loraine, Ohio, Mrs. Joyce Wilson, Mrs. Margaret Griffin, and Mrs. Barbara Ann Lewis of Harkers Island, N.C., Mrs. Margie Morris of Ohio, and Mrs. Velva Jean Smith of Morehead City, N.C.; three brothers, Floyd H. McGowan of Chesapeake, A. J. McGowan of Norfolk, and Charles McGowan of Ogdensburg, N.Y.; and a grandson. A Christian wake service will be held tonight at 7:30 in Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Matthew’s Catholic Church by the Rev. James Guttendorf. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Norfolk.
