He had been in failing health for almost a year, but had kept his business contacts active through the paving contracting firm which he managed at 3811 Killam Avenue. His business was recognized as the largest of its type in the South. Born in Forestport, N.Y., on August 6, 1898, he came to Norfolk in 1909 and made his permanent home here. He attended local Catholic schools and Old Point Comfort College, a military and engineering school. He early became associated in business with his father, Frank J. McGuire, who had established a road construction firm at the turn of the century. When his father died about three years ago, he continued the business and gained prominence throughout Virginia and the Carolinas, Major Projects One of his major projects in the city was paving Hampton Boulevard from the bridge to the Naval Base. He also contracted for several jobs at the Naval Air Station. He was associated here with Fred A. Haycox in the operation of the Asphalt Roads and Materials Company and served as vice president. With other members of the family, he held the controlling interest in the ferries linking Norfolk with Newport News and Old Point Comfort. Recently, however, the ferries were acquired by the State and are now a part of the highway system operated by the Virginia Highway Department. A member of Sacred Heart Church, he made his home at 105 Cromwell Parkway. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elsie Lee McGuire; his mother, Mrs. Stella DeLaporte McGuire, and two sisters, Mrs. Clyde L. Davis and Mrs. V. M. Wagner, all of Norfolk, and a number of nieces and nephews. The body was shipped to the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments late yesterday, pending funeral arrangements.
