NORFOLK - The Rev. Bernard J. McKenna, 62, assistant pastor of Christ the King 
Roman Catholic Church, Norfolk, died Sunday at 6:40 a.m. at a Norfolk hospital.
He was a native of Cookstown County, Tyrone, Ireland, and was the son of Patrick 
and Mrs. Ellen McGarvey McKenna.
He attended St. Columbia’s, Derry, and St. Patrick’s Seminary, Carlow, Ireland. 
He was ordained on June 12, 1921. Since then, he served in many parishes of the 
Diocese of Richmond. These posts included St. Patrick’s, Richmond; St. John’s, 
Leesburg; St. Mary’s, Fairfax; St. Francis’, Staunton; Blessed Sacrament, 
Norfolk, and Christ the King, Norfolk.
He was serving as assistant pastor of the latter at the time of his death. He 
had been a resident of Norfolk for the past 14 years and resided at 3341 
Tidewater Dr. at the time of his death.
He is survived by one brother, John McKenna of South Orange, N.J.; two sisters, 
Sister Philomena and Mrs. Patrick McGarvey, both of Ireland; two nephews and 
four nieces.
The body was taken to the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments. The office of the 
dead service will be held at Christ the King Wednesday at 8 p. m. Requiem High 
Mass will be said at the church Thursday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s 
Cemetery, Norfolk.
