She apparently was the victim of a fire started in her bed by a cigarette, police investigators said. The victim was Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth McKown, of the 1100 block of Laurel Avenue, in the Indian River section. Patrolman Melvin Anderson said the body was discovered in a back bedroom of the single-story, shingled house about 1:30 p.m. by Mrs. Annie Maude Matthias of Westminister Avenue, Norfolk, sister of the victim. Mrs. Matthias told Anderson that she was making one of her periodic visits to her sister. Police said Mrs. McKown lived alone and had not been seen by neighbors for several days. Investigators said Mrs. McKown’s death may have occurred as long as 14 hours before her body was discovered by Mrs. Matthias. Damage from the fire was limited to the bed and the immediate area around it, perplexing investigating police and firemen. One fire official theorized that the fire had burned itself out in that limited area after consuming most of the oxygen in the sealed home. All of the windows and doors in the house were closed at the time the woman’s body was discovered, police reported. A native of Berkley, she lived in this area all of her life. She was a daughter, of Jessie and Mrs. Ethel Mae Batten Cuthrell. She was a Catholic. Surviving are a son, Livius M. McKown Jr., of Chesapeake; sisters, Mrs. Ethel Lupton of Virginia Beach and Mrs. Annie Maude Matthias of Norfolk; two brothers, Jessie Cuthrell and John Cuthrell of Chesapeake; and a brother, Ralph Edward Cuthrell of New York. The body will be taken from Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Road, to St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery for a funeral service Friday at 11 a.m. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/norfolkcity/obits/m/mckown8706nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/vafiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb
