B17 Joseph Edward McMillan, 63, who had both legs amputated below his knees as the result of a railroad accident during World War I and turned to selling newspapers in downtown Norfolk, was given final rites Tuesday at First Baptist church in Campostella. Mr. McMillan, who lived at 1413 Manson street, died Friday at a Norfolk hospital after 45 years as a self-employed newspaper vendor. The Rev. R. L. Harris, pastor of First Baptist, officiated at the rites. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery under direction of Pretlow Funeral Home. Most of this time he was a fixture on lower Granby street, with newspaper bag slung over a shoulder and a shortened pool cue in one hand, walking on padded knees. Mr. McMillan is survived by his wife, Mrs. Julia McMillan, a son, Raymond McMillan; seven foster children; a sister, Mrs. Mackey Jones of Norfolk; two brothers, Leslie McMillan of Hope Mills, NC; and Percy McMillan of Dunn, NC.
