Murdered Officer Will Be Buried Sunday Afternoon

The remains of Officer McNerney were yesterday turned over to Undertaker H. D. 
Oliver by Coroner Kight. An inquest will probably be held today. The funeral 
will take place Sunday afternoon at the Sacred Heart church at 3:30 o’clock. The 
services will be attended by a force of policemen headed by Chief Vellines.
It is understood that McNerney left but little resources behind for his wife and 
three young children and some suggestions have been made to raise a fund for the 
stricken family. The individual members of the police department will defray the 
expenses of the funeral, each contributing a small amount for the purpose.
The sudden and untimely ending of Policeman McNerney’s life has cast a pall of 
gloom over the police department. There is a singular bond of fellowship 
existing among the men who follow this calling. They know each other’s hardships 
and dangers and years of work side by side under such circumstances seal a cord 
of friendly sympathy which nothing can overcome. McNerney was known in the 
department as a quiet, rather non-communicative, brave man, given particularly 
to minding his own affairs and carrying out the duties of his position 
faithfully and fearlessly.
The city hall bell was tolled and the flag over the building half-masted in 
respect to the memory of the dead patrolman.
McNerney was 42 years old and had been on the force since 1893, having been 
appointed under Mayor Cooke’s administration. He was a native of Canada and had 
been a resident of Norfolk for some fifteen years.
