Mrs. McPhillips was born in Avondale, Pa., and grew up in Somers Point, N.J. She was a resident of Norfolk for 47 years. She was a graduate of Trenton State Teachers College (now called the College of New Jersey) and received her master's degree from Columbia University. She was a member of the U.S. Navy WAVES and was formerly employed by Traveler's Aid in Norfolk. She also volunteered with the Ladies of Charity at DePaul Hospital. Survivors include her loving husband of 41 years, John Vincent McPhillips of Norfolk; four children, Charles Vincent McPhillips and his wife, Theresa, of Norfolk, Michael John McPhillips of Dover, N.J., Jane McPhillips Stirm and her husband, Paul, of Mill Valley, Edward Joseph McPhillips and his wife, Mary, of Charlottesville; a brother, Harold Warren Meskers and his wife, Janet, of Lancaster, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Phoebe McPhillips Stirm, Peter Joseph McPhillips, Edward Vincent McPhillips and Robert Vincent Stirm; and many beloved relatives and friends including Kathleen McPhillips Falls, Sarah McPhillips Baker, Walter Michael Caulfield, Terence Joseph McPhillips, Julia Bray McPhillips and the family's "Auntie" Margaret Mary Anne Cordovana. A Mass of Christian burial will be held in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at noon Thursday by Father Joseph H. Metzger III. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A Christian Wake Service will be held in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
