A native of Norfolk, he was a founding partner in the certified public accounting firm of McPhillips, Roberts & Deans, PLC, from which he had “retired” in 1998. The youngest of six children, Vinnie was the son of two Irish immigrants, the late Joseph McPhillips of County Monaghan and the late Sarah Finn McPhillips of County Armagh. Vinnie was predeceased by his beloved wife of 41 years, Ann Meskers McPhillips from Somers Point, N.J. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Genevieve McPhillips Caulfield and Mary McPhillips Reilly. He is survived by his four children, Charles Vincent McPhillips and his wife Theresa of Norfolk, Michael John McPhillips of Norfolk, Jane McPhillips Stirm and her husband Paul of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Edward Joseph McPhillips and his wife Mary of Norfolk. Vinnie is also survived by his six beautiful grandchildren, Phoebe McPhillips Stirm, Robert Vincent Stirm, Peter Joseph McPhillips, Edward Vincent McPhillips, Anna Cushing McPhillips and Catherine Claire McPhillips. He is also survived by two sisters, Kathleen McPhillips Falls and Sarah McPhillips Baker and by his brother, Terence Joseph McPhillips, all of Norfolk; by many beloved nephews and nieces; and by a special friend of the family, Margaret Cordovana. Vinnie attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and Blair Junior High School before graduating from Maury High School in 1944, and the College of William & Mary in 1950. He served in the United States Merchant Marine and in the United States Army. He began his career in certified public accounting with the Norfolk firm of Hilton, Sheffield & Hilton, working there and at its successor firms prior to establishing, in 1972, with his dear friends and partners, the firm now known as McPhillips, Roberts & Deans, PLC. He was past president of the Tidewater Chapter of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. Vinnie was a past president and longtime board member of St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children. He was also a member of the Ryan Club, Norfolk Yacht & Country Club and other social and professional organizations. He served for many years on the Parish and Finance Councils of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. His children look back fondly on his years of patiently coaching Little League Baseball at the old Bluebird Park, where, on one occasion, his young sluggers, down 19-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, with two outs, rallied to tie the score before prevailing in extra innings. A Christian wake will be held today at 6 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Newport Avenue in Norfolk. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Father Joseph H. Metzger III will officiate. Arrangements are being handled by H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments in Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children, 6171 Kempsville Circle, Norfolk, VA 23502.
