He was hospitalized Thursday and believed recovering. Mr. McPhillips, an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, was distinguished by his respect of the religious ideas of others. The practice of brotherhood became an actuality in the firm, which had McPhillips (Catholic), as senior partner, Nathan L. Bennett (Protestant, Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church), and Nathan L. Bennett (Jewish, Beth El Temple), as associates. The firm was the subject of a feature newspaper article recently as the exemplification of Brotherhood Week. McPhillips’ formula for brotherhood was simply “clean minds,” Bennett said. “As far as I can remember, the question of religion has never come up in our business.” Organized in 1941 The three men organized the grocery and provision company in August, 1941, after having become acquainted in earlier years as employees of the old David Pender Stores, later Colonial Stores Incorporated. McPhillips for years was manager of Pender’s main store at Market Street and Monticello Avenue. A native of Ireland, McPhillips came to this country in 1914, and was associated in the grocery business in New York for three years before coming to Norfolk. He lived at 624 West Princess Anne Road. Last year, the Cavalier firm opened its new retail outlet at 7714 Hampton Boulevard. Its ship chandlery division is located at 57-59 Commercial Place. An ardent Catholic, Mr. McPhillips was a member of the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and of the Norfolk Council No. 367, Knights of Columbus. He had reached the fourth degree in the Knights of Columbus. On Hospital Board He also was an honorary lay advisor on the board of DePaul Hospital. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sarah Jane Finn McPhillips; four daughters, Mrs. T. J. Reilly, Mrs. F. Charles Falls and Mrs. A. B. Baker, all of Norfolk, and Mrs. Walter Caulfield of Swansboro, N.C.; two sons, Terence J. McPhillips and John Vincent McPhillips, both of Norfolk; two brothers, Edward McPhillips, of Dublin, Ireland, and John McPhillips, of County Monaghan, Ireland; one sister, Mrs. S. O’Neill, of Dublin, and 19 grandchildren. Rosary services will be conducted tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
