Meloni, 71, a downtown barber and a cellist with the original Norfolk Symphony Orchestra, died Wednesday in a hospital after a short illness. A native of Italy, he lived here most of his life. He was the husband of Mrs. Agnes R. Meloni and a son of Louis and Mrs. Josephine Meloni. He lived at 1521 Magnolia Ave. In recent years, he operated Monticello Hotel Barbershop. For many years he was proprietor of Roma Barbershop and Tonsorial Parlor on lower Granby Street near Plume Street. His shop, patronized by many business and professional men, was noted for its discipline. Meloni played in the Norfolk Symphony’s first concert April 21, 1921, and remained with it 33 years. He was the orchestra’s oldest member. Meloni’s name is included in “With a Song in Their Hearts,” by Mrs. Harold Ferebee, which is a story of the Norfolk Symphony. He was a member of Sons of Italy and a Catholic. Surviving, besides his widow, are a daughter, Mrs. Theodore Forte, and a brother, Theodore Meloni, both of Norfolk; five sisters, Mrs. Francis Ciola and Mrs. Lena Smith of Norfolk, Mrs. Elena Agortini of New York, Mrs. Emelia Bevelacqua of Long Island, N.Y., and Mrs. Della Stanchi of Wheaton, Md.; and a granddaughter. The Office of the Dead will be recited in H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, tonight at 7:30. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated in St. Pius X Catholic Church Friday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
