Mercer, Retired Police Official, Dies Funeral To Be Held at Hollomon-Brown Mortuary Tomorrow Coy Wilson Mercer, 68, retired police detective, died yesterday about 4 p.m. in a Norfolk hospital. He joined the police force as a substitute patrolman in 1909 and was promoted to the rank of detective in 1928. Recognized as an investigator, Mercer was assigned to the stolen car detail for about eight years and then was switched to tracing stolen jewelry. He was retired in 1942 because of his age. He was a member of the Freemason Street Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alena Clatterbaugh Mercer; two sons, Emmett R. and Herman D. Mercer, and his stepmother, Mrs. Ann Mercer, all of Norfolk; seven half brothers, Wallace, Floyd, Louis, Leo and Elmo Mercer, of Princess Anne County; Crawford Mercer, of Boston and Archie Mercer, of Norfolk; and three half sisters. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
