Mercer Found Dead of Asphyxiation Native of North Carolina, He Had Been Berkley Merchant for 40 Years John Walter Mercer, 72, of 227 Hough avenue, Berkley, was found dead of asphyxiation early yesterday morning in the kitchen of his home by his wife. Gas was flowing from the stove. Mr Mercer was a native of Camden County, N.C. and had been a resident of Berkley 45 years. He was a grocery merchant for the past 40 years. Mr. Mercer was the son of Jesse and Mrs. Lydia Toler Mercer and was a member of the First Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lee Morgan Mercer; four sons, Pat, Richard, Ashburn and Cecil Mercer, all of Norfolk; four grandchildren and two brothers, D.S. Mercer, Norfolk and R.O. Mercer, Elizabeth City, N.C. The body will be taken from the funeral home of E. Lee Cox & Bro., Westover avenue at Manteo street, to the residence for funeral services this afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. J.F. Morgan, pastor of the Rosemont Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot in Magnolia Cemetery.
