Mercer of 981 Rugby street died in her home after a long illness. A native of Norfolk, she was the widow of James H. Mercer and a daughter of the late Caswell and Mrs. Jennie Austin. She was a member of St. John’s AME Church, Phyllis Wheatley Circle, and Lindenwood Neighborhood Club. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lucille M. Cuffee and Mrs. Jessie Northington, a brother, Deedom Austin, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Moore, all of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Services were held in St. John’s AME Church by the Rev. A. R. Powell. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with Riddick Funeral service in charge of arrangements.
