She was the beloved wife of Frank Mercer Jr. and the daughter of the late J.R.C. Saunders and Ella Archer Saunders, who resides in the home. Mrs. Mercer was a lifelong resident of Norfolk. Born Oct. 17, 1927, Mrs. Mercer attended Norfolk Public Schools. She was a graduate of Howard University with a major in sociology and Hampton Institute (University) earning a master's degree in education. She worked for a time in Maryland with the Social Services Bureau, and later returned to Norfolk where she taught in the Norfolk City School System for more than 30 years. She married Frank Mercer Jr. July 27, 1956, and later entered the journey of motherhood 50 years ago with the birth of her son, Dr. Frank Mercer III (Manouchka) and then later with the birth of her daughter, Kimberley Green (Calvin). She anxiously awaited the birth of her four grandchildren, Morgan, Taylor, Francesca and Frank IV. She cherished the moments of being on the soccer field, taking them to the library, reviewing their ABCs, feeding the ducks, going on walks and giving hugs and kisses. Affectionately known as "Dottie" to family and friends, she delighted in making others happy. In later years, the grandchildren were her special project. She became a soccer grandmother and a homework guru. She also gave many hours to her church, First Baptist Church, (E. Bute Street), where she assumed leadership roles, especially in The Gleaners Club and in other outreach and hospitality ministries. Longtime members of her church will remember how she delighted in organizing a singing contest among local ministers. She was an active member of the Iota Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and served as president in the Broad Creek Civic League. In addition to her husband, children and grandchildren, Mrs. Mercer leaves to cherish her memory her mother; a special caretaker and friend, Loretta Brandon; dear friends, Mr. and Mrs. Conway Mitter; cousins, other relatives, friends and neighbors. Friends and family are invited to the Alpha Kappa Alpha memorial service at Graves Funeral Home, 1631 Church St., Norfolk today at 6:30 p.m. The funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in First Baptist Church, 418 E. Bute St., Norfolk. The Rev. Dr. Robert G. Murray will preside. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery on St. Julian Avenue. The family invites all family and friends to return to the church for a repast after interment.
