Mercer, known as ``Tack'', 97 years of age, passed away on March 28, 2001, in Sentara Bayside Hospital. Born in Norfolk, Mr. Mercer was a longtime resident of Portsmouth. During his later years, he resided in Virginia Beach with his wife, daughter and family. Mr. Mercer was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High L School, Norfolk, Class of 1921, and Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, Class of 1925. He received his Masters of Arts degree from Columbia University, New York, in 1950 and Professional Diploma in Music Education, from Teachers College of Columbia University, 1951. Although Mr. Mercer had various professions, he served for many years on the faculty of Norfolk State University as associate professor of music. He also served as minister of music at Friendship Baptist Church, New York City, and Zion Baptist Church, Portsmouth, for over 35 years. He was a proud 79-year active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, initiated Epsilon Chapter at Lincoln University, Pennsylvania. He was so a Mason and a member of the Norfolk New Light Lodge No. 196 along with many professional and civic organizations including Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Society and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. In January 1996, the William T. Mercer Foundation Inc. was established to honor his years of community service and to develop a scholarship in his name. Mr. Mercer was a lifetime member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, Norfolk. He served in the church's music ministry as founder and director of the William T. Mercer Male Chorus, church organist and pianist and worked on numerous church committees William T. Mercer is survived by his wife, Myra P. Mercer of 52 years; two daughters, Nanocie M. Diggs and husband Claude, Angela M. Mercer and husband Regi- nald Corinaldi; five grandchildren, Sharif, Claude III, Taj, Nijha and Kadija; and a loving family and host of friends. The wake with a Kappa Alpha Psi memorial service will be conducted from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Cedric Kirkland-Harris, pastor. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk. Fisher Funeral Home, Ports mouth, is in charge.
