Virginian Pilot and The Norfolk Landmark February 16, 1919 

Alfonso Mercer, a native of Currituck County, N.C., but a resident of Norfolk 
for forty years, died in a Norfolk hospital yesterday morning at 7 o'clock after 
a short illness.
Mr. Mercer was 72 years old. He is well known as having at one time been deputy 
city sergeant of Norfolk. He was the son of the late Thomas and Mrs. Mary Gray 
Mercer.
Surviving relatives are his wife, Mrs. Virginia C. Mercer and three sons, W.W., 
H.A. and Alfonso Mercer, Jr. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 4 
o'clock at the family residence, 204 West Twenty-sixth Street.  Interment will 
follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
