Mercer, 89, of Beth Sholom and formerly of Sparrow Road, went to be with the Lord Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010. Born in the Berkley section of Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late George and Lillian Wrenn. She was predeceased by her husband, Cecil L. Mercer; two brothers, George and Joel Wrenn; and a sister, Margaret Burkett. Lil will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. She was a member of Oaklette United Methodist Church where she was a past administrative board member, a member of the John Teter Sunday school class and an active member of the United Methodist Women of the Teter McDonough Harris Circle. She graduated from Maury High School in 1938 and received her business degree from Kee Business College. Lil worked for the City of Chesapeake registrar's office from 1970 to 1987. She became the city's third general voter registrar in 1975 and held the position through her retirement in 1987. She was a longtime member of the Chesapeake General Hospital Auxiliary and served in various community service groups. Survivors include her daughter, JoAnn Mercer- McCabe and husband John of Virginia Beach; a son, the Rev. Thomas L. Mercer Sr. and wife Susan of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Thomas L. Mercer Jr. and wife Rebekah, Christa Mercer, Luke Mercer and Caleb Mercer; and one great-grandson, Thomas L. Mercer III. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 8, at Oaklette United Methodist Church, corner of Oaklette Drive and Indian River Road, Chesapeake. The interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery, Norfolk. The viewing will begin Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oaklette United Methodist Church Roof Fund or to the Hickory United Methodist Church Building Fund.
