Virginian-Pilot June 11, 1901
Rev. Father Thomas J. Mercer, pastor of the Catholic church at Old Point for the 
past sixteen years, departed this life at St. Vincent’s Hospital at 6 o’clock 
Sunday afternoon from an attack of appendicitis, from which he had suffered for 
some time at Old Point. He was removed to the hospital only eleven days ago. The 
deceased priest was born in Richmond, but spent his youth and young manhood in 
this city. He was 41 years of age and is survived by a sister, Miss Mary Mercer, 
of Norfolk. The funeral will be solemnized from St. Mary’s Catholic church at 10 
o’clock Wednesday morning. The interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.

He was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery.
