An Eighteen Months Old Child Badly Burned and Dies. Yesterday afternoon about 4:30 o’clock, Mrs. William Merkle, of No. 104 Bermuda street, gave her 18 months old child, which was playing on the floor, a newspaper to amuse itself with. The little one crawled close to the grate fire and the paper became ignited, setting fire to the little one’s clothing. The child’s screams brought the mother to the room, but when she arrived she was too late, though in her heroic efforts to extinguish the flames, she herself was badly burned. The child was burned over the entire body, and though medical assistance was summoned, aid did not arrive until the child was dead. No arrangements have been made for the funeral.
