Merlo, 71, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at Sentara Leigh Hospital. A native of Gioiosa Marea, Italy (Sicily), she was the daughter of the late Alfonso and Mariana Casamento. She came with four children to Norfolk in March 1969 to join her husband Orazio. Known and loved by many, particularly in the Ghent area of Norfolk, as Mama Merlo, she and Bruna Ossi owned and operated an eatery called Roma 83 for several years. Being known best for her Italian cooking, she was the personal chef to many Norfolk families. She also worked beside her husband at Merlo Inc. restoring antique furniture. Her main goal in life was to bring joy, happiness and love to her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who took much pride in preparing her special dishes for her family and friends. Mrs. Merlo is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Orazio; two daughters, Sarina Bowen of Virginia Beach and Anna Sweetman of Dover, Del.; three sons, Alex, Alfonso and Mario Merlo, all of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and a special niece and nephew, Anna and Alfonso Casamento of Sicily. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father John Dorgan. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 520 Graydon Ave., Norfolk, VA 23507. Online condolences may be made to hdoliver.com.
