John T. Merritt Sr., 72, of the 1600 block of Beaumont Court, died Feb. 15, 
2001, at home.
Born in Greenwich, Conn., he was a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, and a 
host and manager of the Navy Exchange. He attended Little Creek Amphibious Base 
Chapel; was past grand knight; member of Father Kealy Council Knights of 
Columbus No. 3548; and Fleet Reserve Branch No. 60.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa L. Merritt; a daughter, Sandra Hudson of 
Callawa, Md.; a son, John T. Merritt Jr. and wife, Cynthia B., of Norfolk; his 
mother, Ann Merritt of Norfolk; two brothers, Albert C. Merritt of Virginia 
Beach and George A. Merritt of Norfolk; four grandchildren, James M. Merritt and 
Rose M. Merritt, both of Norfolk, Laura N. Hudson and Meridith L. Hudson, both 
of Maryland; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at noon Saturday at Little Creek 
Amphibious Base Chapel. Entombment in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The family will 
receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater 
Drive Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the 
Leukemia Society for the love of his grandchildren and all children.
Jack was a loving husband, wonderful father, the greatest grandpa and devoted 
son and brother. He was a friend to all he met, for he always enjoyed the 
company around him. His neighbors, his Knights of Columbus brothers, his son’s 
softball team and fellow firefighters will all truly miss him. Isaiah 40:31
