Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Wednesday, July 3, 1991 
Alvah J. Merritt Sr., of the 900 block of Craten Road, a retired container
inspector, died June 30, 1991, in his home.

Mr. Merritt was born in Norfolk. He had retired after 37 years and was a member
of International Longshoreman's Association 1248 and First Baptist Church-Bute
Street. He was vice president of the Chesapeake Gardens Civic League. He was an
Army Air Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Walker Merritt; four daughters, Pamela M.L.
Gibbs, Regina S. Merritt and Brandy L. Merritt, all of Norfolk, and Janice M.
Floyd of Chesapeake; a sister, Edith E. Oliver and a brother, John E. Merritt
Jr., both of Norfolk; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in First Baptist Church-Bute
Street by the Rev. Robert G. Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery .
Friends may join the family at the residence. The body will be placed in the
church at 10 a.m. Saturday. Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
