NORFOLK - Roland J. Messick Sr., 104, passed away on June 28, 2002.

Born in Norfolk on Nov. 5, 1897, he was the son of the late William and Betty
Messick . Mr. Messick was a retired fireman, having served 34 1/2 years with the
Norfolk Fire Department. He was a member of Willowwood Presbyterian Church. Mr.
Messick was predeceased by his wife, Charlotte B. Messick ; a son, R. James
``Jim'' Messick Jr.; and grandsons, Charles and Randy Messick .

He is survived by his daughters, C. Frances Eisenhower of Norfolk, Virginia M.
Murden and husband Buddy of Virginia Beach, Elizabeth A. Alston of Monroe,
Mich., and Regina L. Stacy and husband B.J., of Virginia Beach; former
daughter-in-law, Joy Lance of Norfolk; daughter-in-law, Tresa Messick of Tampa,
Fla.; 11 grandchildren; four step grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three
step great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and two step
great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Cemetery with
the Rev. Frank E. Drake, officiating. The family will receive friends at Smith &
Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
