A lifelong resident of this area, he was born in Portsmouth, a son of Joseph Anthony Messina, now of New York City, and the late Mrs. Margaret Walters Messina. He was the husband of Mrs. Katherine L. Messina. He formerly played baseball at Wilson High School and was a member of Ingleside Sports Club and Kempsville Manor Golf Course. He owned the Beach Boulevard Esso Station. He was a production control man of the Overhaul & Repair Department at the Norfolk Naval Air Station and a former vice president of the Naval Air Station Employees and Welfare League. He was a veteran of World War I and the Korean War. Besides his father and widow, surviving are three sons, John Joseph Messina Jr., Michael Paul Messina and David Anthony Messina of Norfolk; a sister, Mrs. Anne Woolard of Norfolk; a brother, Joseph Anthony Messina Jr. of Detroit; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Walters of Portsmouth. The Rosary will be recited in H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Sunday at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted in Christ the King Catholic Church Monday at 10 a.m., with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
