She was born in Norfolk and had retired from teaching in the Norfolk public school system. She was a member of Freemason Street Baptist Church, where she was a deacon and a member of the Melton Bible Class. She was the president of the Norfolk Division of William and Mary - V.P.I. Alumni Association, and was the past president of the Norfolk Women's Club. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth B. Metcalfe Sr.; a daughter, Rebecca M. Thomason and her husband, Claude, of Richmond; two sons, Kenneth B. Metcalfe Jr. and his wife, Rita, of Williamsburg and Robert D. Metcalfe and his wife, Carolyn, of Portsmouth; and five grandchildren, Elizabeth, John, Alexander, Landon and Ashley. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Elmwood Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Freemason Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Steven E. Fitzgerald. Memorial donations may be made to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
