A native and lifelong Norfolk resident, he was born Feb. 4, 1919, and was the son of the late Charles and Sadie Millan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Arriett Barnard. A 1937 Maury High School graduate, Dr. Millan continued his education, graduating from the Southern College of Optometry. He followed his father in the optometric practice and was one of the longest practicing optometrists in the state of Virginia. The family optometric practice has been in continuous existence for more than 100 years. Dr. Millan was past president of the Tidewater Optometric Society, the Virginia Optometric Association, as well as the Virginia Academy of Optometry. Dr. Millan was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, serving on the Administrative Committee and Parish Council. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and served as a State Deputy and a Past Grand Knight. He was on the Board of Directors of the Sons and Daughters of Lebanon and helped raise funds for St. Jude Children's Hospital. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Georgette; his loving children, Charlotte M. Cohea and husband Thomas of Norfolk, Marie M. Egert of Chesapeake and Edward Millan Jr. of Norfolk; sister, Gloria M. Saliba of Norfolk; grandchildren, Danielle J. Cohea of Cleveland, Ohio, and Alexandra M. Egert of Chesapeake; and a nephew, Leslie Barnard and wife Jan of Chesapeake. A Christian wake will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church followed by a visitation until 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in the church by Father Daniel Klem followed by burial in Saint Mary's Cemetery after which a reception will be held at Sacred Heart.
