Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Wednesday, October 4, 1995 
Gratia Francis Mitchell, 75, of the 6000 block of Wesleyan Drive, died Oct. 1,
1995, in a local hospital in Norfolk.

She was a coordinator of disability services for the STOP organization where she
had worked for 26 years. She had been retired from there for 3 years. She was a
native of Norfolk and was the widow of Simon T. Mitchell. She was a member of
Grace Episcopal, Norfolk, where she was a member of St. Monica's Guild,
Episcopal Church Women, a former church choir member, and a Sunday school
teacher. She was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.; Coriander and
Kiski Clubs, Chesapeake; Virginia Beach Chapter of Links Inc.; Tidewater Chapter
Coalition of 100 Black Women; Kappa Silhouettes; and the Howard University
Choir. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nevada C. and G. Hamilton
Francis; and a sister, Alois Chavis.

She is survived by one daughter, Judith Mitchell Taylor of Burtonsville, Md.;
son-in-law, Steven Edward Taylor of Burtonsville, Md.; grandchildren, Steven E.
Taylor Jr., Simone C. Taylor; niece Cathy Chavis; and a host of cousins and
friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday by Father Harold J. Cobbs
in Grace Episcopal Church, Norfolk. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Family
and friends will assemble at the home at noon Thursday for the procession to the
church. There will be a wake service from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Hale Funeral Chapel.
