Portsmouth - John E. Mitchell Sr. of 2524 Moton St. died Sunday in a hospital.

A native of Norfolk County, he was a son of Ivey and Mrs. Sally B. Mitchell and
the husband of the late Mrs. Mildred D. Mitchell.

He was a member of the choir of Noble Street Baptist Church. He was also a
38-year retired employee of Seaboard Air Line Railroad.

He is survived by five sons, Army Spec. 5 Herbert Mitchell of Germany, and John
E. Mitchell Jr., Robert Mitchell, Alton Mitchell and Albert Mitchell of
Portsmouth; a sister, Mrs. Celia B. Weatherspoon of Portsmouth; and nine
grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Rogers Funeral Home Chapel
by the Rev. Joseph W. Gaines with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk. The
family will be at 2508 Portsmouth Blvd.
