On May 6, 2004, God opened His loving arms and received one of His children, 
Madie Beatrice Mitchell to receive her reward in His kingdom. Mrs. Mitchell was 
the daughter of the late Mattie Lee Bishop and Earnest Bishop. She was 
predeceased by her husband, Lee Mitchell and her only sister, Laura Mae Johnson. 
She was born Oct. 22, 1912, in Lexington, N.C. Her parents moved to Norfolk 
while she was quite young. She was converted and baptized at Queen Street 
Baptist Church under the Rev. Williams, after which she became a faithful member 
of First Calvary Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Rev. O.J. Allen. Mrs. 
Mitchell was a member of the Hospitality Committee, Usher Board No. 1, the 
Senior Missionary Circle, the Pastors Anniversary Committee and the Womens Club. 

Mrs. Mitchell attended S.C. Armstrong Elementary School, Booker T. Washington 
High School, Piedmont School of Nursing in Burkesville, Va., and Norfolk State 
University. She was employed by the federal government for more than 30 years. 

Mrs. Mitchell leaves to cherish her memory her devoted niece, Althia J. Garvin 
and nephew, Garry Garvin Sr. of Chesapeake; a great-nephew, Garry Garvin Jr.; a 
great-niece, Ashley Garvin; a goddaughter, Greta Carney of Chesapeake; a 
stepson, Michael Mitchell of Portsmouth; a dear friend, Edna Powell of Norfolk; 
and a host of other relatives and friends. 

A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in First Calvary Baptist Church by 
Dr. Johnnie L. White with burial in Calvary Cemetery . Graves Funeral Home is in 
charge.
