Montagna, 92, of the 1600 block of Sheppard Ave., one of the founders of Montagna Shoe Stores, died Oct. 19, 1990, in a hospital. Mr. Montagna, a native of Norfolk, had retired after 75 years in his family's shoe business. He recalled in a 1985 interview with The Virginian-Pilot that, when he began selling shoes at age 11, high-topped shoes with long rows of pearl buttons were the fashion for women. He and a brother, Frank, co-founded the Granby Street store in 1922. Other stores were added as the business and family grew. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the Moose Lodge and a life member of the Elks Lodge 38 of Norfolk. He was a former member of Consolvo Tent Saints and Sinners. Survivors include a sister, Annie Montagna, and a brother, Anthony Montagna, both of Norfolk. A Mass of the Resurrection will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk.
